Doucai Brush Washer - Kangxi Period

    Period: Qing Dynasty - Kangxi Period (1662 - 1722)

This finely potted brush washer is attributed to Kangxi period, two 'Qi-Lin' are seperated by rocks and palm trees. Possible infulenced by imperial court porcelains, brush stokes are not such vivid like other Kangxi period doucai objects.

By removing most of the background filed to different depths, the carver creates a subtle representation lfeft in shallow relief. On one side, a scholar sits down under a pine tree, on the other side, a poetry along with signature of 'Wu zhifan' were inscribed.

Wu zhifan is one of the best know names in the art of bamboo carving. He was a late seventeenth-century artist from the Jiading district of Jiangsu.

 
Small Xuande Bird Food Pot

Bird fodd pot was used to hang in the bird cage to supply food or water. Pattern of leaves are painted continuously on the pot, leaves themselves are rendered with heavily painted glaze that creates dark black spots, an effect known in English translation from the Chinese as "heap-and-pile." This pot has been broken in several pieces, and was glued together.

This lightweight dish is a rare product of the renowned Yaozhou ware from kilns in northern China's Shanxi province. Its combination of the fish tail dragon with sea waves is a composition seen nowhere else in Sung ceramics. In the west, green-glazed stoneware from the Yahozhou kilns is sometimes refferred to as northern celadon, to distinguish it from the Longquan variety.

Longquan Tripod Censor - Late Yuan Dynasty

This Longquan tripod censor was made at the late Yuan dynasty, but may possibly be contributed to early Ming dynasty, though most Ming Longquan pieces are more glassy than pieces from Yuan dynasty. Handles on this censor are rare twisted rope shape, body is covered with relief of flowers patterns.

Sancai-glazed techique was almost diminished in Nothern Sung dyansty, this pillow is actually a Ding ware piece, definitely borrowed artistic techinque from Tang dynasty, flowers are carved with confidence and fluently. Only few similar pieces can be found in several renowned museums
 
Bamboo Brush Holder - Early Qing Dynasty

The brushpot carrying the signature "made by Quan Lin" is fashioned from a single segment of bamboo and carved with pine tree surrounded by scholars in high relief. While the carving is done with confidence and great refinement, its powerful, curving forms and irregular surface display a refreshing spontaneity that seems almost organic.
During the Ming dynasty, bamboo carving was elevated to a specialty art form and the names of skilled carvers became well known.
