Ruby, or rose, eamel has recently been introduced into China by Western missionaries when this bowl was apparently commissioned by the emperor Kangxi from the imperial workshop in the Forbidden City, where porcelain made in Jingdezhen was decorated and refired. This bowl is evidence that the Chinse had succeeded in duplicating European colors and shows how enamel made it possible to create tonality and gradation with the addition of opaque white. This bowl has a thin and very lightweight body of exquisite shape, on the outside are blossoming flower branches. On the base of the bowl is a four-character mark written in overglaze blue enamel 'commissioned by the Emperor Kangxi',
