Bamboo Brush Holder - Early Qing Dynasty

  Period: Qing Dynasty 17th Century
Dimension: H. 6.3" D 5"

The brushpot carrying the signature "made by Quan Lin" is fashioned from a single segment of bamboo and carved with pine tree surrounded by scholars in high relief. While the carving is done with confidence and great refinement, its powerful, curving forms and irregular surface display a refreshing spontaneity that seems almost organic.
During the Ming dynasty, bamboo carving was elevated to a specialty art form and the names of skilled carvers became well known.
